Long Flight and International Travel Tips

Traveling Internationally, especially for the first time can be an exciting adventure. It’s important to be prepared to encourage a positive experience during this long journey.

Besides making sure your Passports and Visas are up to date, are you prepared for how you will feel physically and mentally after such a long flight?

Plane rides from the U.S to Europe average about 8 hours depending on where you’re flying to and from. They can be even longer if you’re going to far away places such as Australia or Africa, can be over 13 hours!

When I first started traveling out of the country, I was surprised how my body reacted to such a long flight. I wasn’t prepared for the extreme Jet Lag, Motion Sickness or numerous other things.

After lots of trial and error, I gradually learned how to prepare my body and mind to recover more quickly and enjoy my trip without wasting days in my hotel room because of Jet Lag and more.

Here are some tips to prepare your mind and body for the long trip.

Before your trip

  • Drink Lots of Water, keeping yourself hydrated is key to bouncing back quickly.
  • Stock up on Melatonin Supplements, it’s also a natural hormone found in your body that encourages sleep.
  • Once on the plane, you should immediately engage your destinations time zone, if it is night at your destination, take the melatonin on the plane and sleep etc
  • If you experience Motion Sickness, Ginger is an excellent supplement for nausea. Ginger Ale can also help. I would avoid reading, or doing too much moving. Use this time to close your eyes and relax. Of course have a nausea bag readily available.
  • During the long flight it is important to move your feet and legs to prevent blood clots. You will probably need a bathroom break on such a long flight. Take your time and really stretch your legs. In your seat you can also make circles with your ankles and gently lift your knees up and down to promote circulation.
  • Keep Aspirin handy since it’s a blood thinner, and is also helpful with headaches usually associated with long flights.
  • Be sure to splash your face with cold water in the bathroom, it’s good for your skin and more.

Once you have arrived

  • Continue to drink lots of Water
  • Stay away from heavy meals as long flights can alter your bowel habits for the first day or so.
  • Eat light fruits, salads, anything that will promote proper digestion packed with nutrients
  • During the day (depending on the weather) open the curtains and windows to let in fresh air and sunshine, this simple step will speed up your recovery and mood!
  • When it is bedtime at your destination and if you can’t sleep, it’s ok to take the Melatonin, it helped me get on the correct time zone quickly, and it didn’t leave me groggy in the morning like other sleep supplements.

These are just a few of the many tips that can help you feel more fit and alert after your long journey. Take it from Me, I’ve Been There, Done That.

Happy Travels!

Top Ways to Travel Safely in Croatia

Croatia is a wonderful country to visit year round. There are many things to do in Croatia like seeing the Ancient City Walls, the Island of Lokrum and the scenic European Route E65. Once you are there, you will be able to find many adventure tours that will allow you to see an entirely different side of Croatia. There are also a myriad of ethnic foods that you can try. You may want to go on a hike afterwards in one of the scenic routes or simply wander the beautiful streets. However, when you visit Croatia, you should make sure that you are travelling with international travel insurance for many reasons.

Medical Insurance for Travellers in Croatia

No one wants to think that they may get hurt while away on vacation, but it can happen. If you are going to be doing activities that you would not normally do or are in unfamiliar places then medical insurance will save you from an extreme financial debt upon your return trip, should you fall ill or be hurt. If you are walking around in parts of Croatia that are “off the beaten track”, you should know that there are areas that have unexploded landmines. Although it is very unlikely that you may become hurt by one, this is just one of the unexpected scenarios that you could come across while visiting Croatia.

Insurance for Personal Belongings in Croatia

Sometimes your medical policy may cover your personal effects abroad but in case it only covers you partially, you should make sure you policy covers your personal items. Also, this is not the only reason why this insurance is necessary. When you are travelling around in Croatia, you may incur some sort of damage to your baggage and in a very unlikely event, your personal belongings may be stolen during transport. If this is the case, then travel insurance will help to replace stolen or damaged items.

Travel Insurance for Delayed or Cancelled Plans in Croatia

It is not uncommon when travelling to endure delays of some type. Croatia is a country in development which means that not all of the services run like clockwork. Depending on the weather and the circumstances it is not unusual for flights to be delayed or cancelled in Croatia. When this happens, you may end up having to spend a lot of money replacing car rentals, hotel reservations and even plane tickets. But if you have travel insurance, then you will be able to recuperate your losses very easily.

Comparing Online International Travel Insurance

The best way to find international travel insurance for visiting Croatia on holiday is by going online. You will find the best international travel insurance on the internet by comparing prices and seeing which will suit your specific travel needs.

Tips For International Travel

If the entire budget is spent on airfare, there won’t be enough money left to impress that potential new client or simply to relax and enjoy yourself in your downtime. An international travel experience can be made all that much better by booking business class flights and cheap first class travel with an experienced, reputable agent. There is no need to spend too much on airfare when there are online agencies that specialize in inexpensive airfare along with excellent service.

Successful business trips can make or break a company. Spending more than you should on getting there is a waste of hard earned profits. Working with a reputable online agency that specializes in business class flights can provide the best of both worlds – financial savings and comfortable arrangements. There is no need to spend too much on expensive flights when there are plenty of cheap first class travel options available.

Whereas international travel booked directly through the airline can be notoriously expensive, there are online services that can provide you with cheap first class travel or inexpensive business class flights and outstanding service. Just because the airfare is inexpensive does not result in a different flying experience, unless, of course, the flight is more enjoyable due to saving a big chunk of money!

Pack Light

One of the best ways to enjoy an international trip is to pack light. Many travelers make the mistake of over packing. This only results in extra costs, extra weight to lug around, and having to dig around unnecessarily in a suitcase. Ideally, luggage should be narrowed down to one checked bag and one carry-on bag. Travelers can save space by packing properly, such as using shoes to hold socks and other small items.

Planning the wardrobe for your business meetings ahead of time can make a big difference. If everything is interchangeable and color coordinated, fewer articles of clothing are needed. Purchasing toiletries upon arrival also saves space. To simplify identifying luggage at baggage claim, many travelers use a colorful ribbon or tape to mark their suitcase. Finally, leave all valuables at home.

Stay Safe

International trips can provide a lifetime of wonderful memories. It can also be used to boost your business and expand sales. Traveling internationally can come with some risks, but these risks can be easily minimized with some common sense and these helpful hints from the U.S. State Department:

a. Be sure to sign your passport and fill in the emergency contact information
b. Leave copies of your itinerary and your passport information with a friend or family member
c. Check on your overseas medical coverage before you leave
d. Familiarize yourself with the basic laws of the country you will be visiting

International trips are an excellent way to spend time with your family or friends, or to build your business. Cheap first class travel can leave you with far more pocket money to spend on other aspects of your international experience.

International Business Travel – Dos and Don’ts

My first business meeting in a country where English was not the native tongue was in Germany. I was terribly nervous. I didn’t know German, and no one was with me that could speak it. I fell all over myself trying to make apologies for speaking in English and not knowing their language. They brushed it off as no big deal. It turns out that English is widely accepted in Germany as the language of business and most Germans are taught it as a second language throughout their early school years.

So began my journey into the new world of international business travel. I made many mistakes along the way, but eventually I was able to make these trips and hold business meetings routinely without all the drama. I’ll spare you the learning curve and share these international business travel Dos and Don’ts with you:

  • Do use the buddy system. It’s very important to have someone with you when you travel internationally. Making your way in an unfamiliar country can be bewildering and is more work than you realize. It usually takes two sets of eyes and ears to do things that you would normally do on autopilot when you’re at home.
  • Do find local help. If you can have someone meet you at the airport, get you settled at the hotel, help you with logistics, and join you for your meetings, then don’t pass up the opportunity. It simplifies things greatly. And even though English is the language of business, don’t take it for granted. There are important points that will be missed in a meeting just because it’s too hard for your hosts to think of the right words to say in English. A helper who knows the language will pick up on this nuance and take the time to get everything on the table and make sure you understand.
  • Do speak slowly. You need to slow it down and pause frequently so that your hosts have time to translate in their heads. This way of speaking will feel unnatural, but if you don’t do it they will either stop you repeatedly so that they can catch up, or they’ll give up altogether and tune you out.
  • Don’t cram too much into a meeting agenda. You need to cut your expectations in half at least. It takes twice as long to exchange ideas when there are translations going on.
  • Don’t be an ugly American. Keep the mindset at all times that you are a guest and that their time and company is a gift to you. Try to learn a few phrases of their language for little things like, “thank you”, “pleased to meet you”, “good morning”, and “good bye”. Show an interest in their culture and history, and be respectful of their traditions and past.
  • Do be prepared for culture shock. Total immersion in another culture will take it’s toll on you. Between this and the jet lag your mental energy will run out and you will crash hard the first couple nights. Don’t be surprised if you are dying for a cheeseburger and all you want to do at night is hide in your room. But resist these urges and get out and see the world. Your chances to do this are few and far between, and the memories will last you a lifetime.

International Travel Checklist

It’s always very exciting when you’re flying overseas. However, it is very hectic and confusing for some people. Many unpredictable circumstances may arise before you reach that foreign country. When it happens, you won’t even have a clue about what you should do next! Thankfully, these situations can be avoided by following some simple steps. It is important that you prepare a travel checklist in case you get caught in one of those undesirable situations.

Customs, Passports and Visas

To visit any foreign country, you need a valid passport. The problem comes with visas and work permits. You will be required to produce your visa when you enter or leave a foreign country, which is generally in the form of a stamp or notation that is attached to your passport. Make it a point to get your visa beforehand. Never leave it to be acquired later. Sometimes there are delays in procuring a visa, and you end up wasting your time and money in the middle of your travel. If you are visiting a country for official business, then you will be asked to produce a work permit.

There are serious customs regulations in a number of countries. Check in advance what items you are allowed to carry. Do not take penknives, scissors, or anything that resembles a weapon. Leave all your precious and religious jewelry at home. If you’re carrying a camera, then you might be required to have a permit for that as well in some countries. Do not buy any wildlife souvenirs. They might be illegal in your own country.

Safety

Remember to leave your planned route of travel with somebody back home. Also leave a copy of all your travel documents. Do not travel without insurance. Check the offer document carefully to see if it covers any adventurous activities that you might be involved in, such as extreme water sports. Do not discuss your itinerary with strangers. Make sure that you know the emergency helpline numbers of the country where you’re going. Also keep the contact information of your embassy in that country. When abroad, do not show off your valuable gadgets. Avoid eating and drinking at isolated places. Use packaged drinking water, if possible. Always respect the local law and be careful not to enter into quarrels with the locals.

Convenience

Inform your airline about non-tagged luggage immediately if you notice any. Keep a small guidebook, preferable the one that has some expressions in the foreign language. A small and basic first aid kit might come in handy. If you’re not taking a cell phone, make sure that you rent one.

Taking these simple measures will ensure that you will be safe and enjoy a convenient stay.
